Event Log: 3/29/14 - Cool Discoveries

Every so often, I stumble upon something so great that my only thought is: "This is SO interesting." That moment arrived when I discovered Gate, a manga about a parallel fantasy world being connected to modern day Japan.

It reminds me of an argument I had with my friends about the efficacy of modern day military squads vs medieval squadrons. One of my friends insisted that no amount of technology can overcome pure numbers while the rest of us argued that modern tactics, gear, and the overwhelming psychological advantage offered by advanced weaponry would be enough to overcome numbers given the right environment. It was a heated and hilarious debate. I wish somebody would make a game based on the premise. I long to shoot charging cavalrymen in the face.

Earlier, I watched YouTube videos related to earthquakes because of yesterday's earthquake. That led me through all sorts of disaster programs. Seriously, these shows feast off of fear. The chances of the world ending anytime soon are quite low (knocks on wood).

I've been on a manga spree lately and it doesn't look like I'll be slowing down anytime soon.

Event Log: 3/28/14 - EARTHQUAKE

That was one helluva shaker. A little after 9'o clock, my room was jiving thanks to a 5.1 magnitude quake from Brea. A deck of cards even fell down. That was the extent of the damage. My younger brother woke up and was freakin' out yelling "OH SHIT" repeatedly. I had a good laugh. Minor aftershocks rolled out like every other big quake but everybody acting concerned because reasons. I started reading up on earthquakes thanks to that. I wouldn't know what to do if the hypothetical "Big One" hit.

It was my brother's 38th birthday. Whew, he's gettin' old. Ice cream cake. For some reason, all my sister/brother buys are ice cream cakes. I'd like cake that doesn't melt, please.

My friend and I beat Dead Nation on Morbid and started up a new game on Undead. We is dyin' like flies out here. We have to play more carefully since even a regular zombie can dice us up easy. Unfortunately, time is short. He'll be flying off to his home country to tie the knot with his overseas fiancee. Goodbye late night gaming sessions.

Event Log: 3/27/14 - A Sudden Twist

Okay, Seishun Pop! just made a turn for the bizarre. I did not expect the things to happen to actually happen even though the author dropped plenty of hints in the beginning. You never go full crazy--actually, you always go full crazy.

I cheated on my run and took a shorter path. It didn't feel any shorter though.

I started a manga that had the audacity to name itself Life. It was tough trying to get through the beginning. It's not because I think it's unrealistic, it's because its undoubtedly the reality for some people, and that's the real tragedy.

Event Log: 3/26/14 - Inching Forward

It feels good to get another chapter out there. I was working on Mister Cinderella intermittently throughout the day. Like usual, I cut out the last part of the chapter and pushed it into the next one. I do it for pacing reasons and because I'm too lazy to revise.

I finished Love Lab on Crunchyroll and got another achievement out of it. I watched SAO Extra and it was a total retread. Might as well remove all the flashbacks and make it a thirty-minute OVA. It reminded me of everything I hated about the show like the terrible premise.

Thanks to all the VR buzz, I read through Ressentiment. It was interesting but there's only so much loser I can take from a protagonist. Seems like the hallmark of your average manga protagonist is being a spineless perverted wimp.

I'm reading Seishun Pop! right now and yeah, there are definitely some annoying quirks in there.

When I think about it, Mister Cinderella is my counter to Ichigo 100%. I can't tell you how much that manga pissed me off. I think you can tell from my stories that I prefer characters who are highly capable.

Then again, in something like Shokugeki no Soma, a highly skilled individual who is dense to the attention of girls around him is kind of annoying as well, but not as much. At least they're not useless in all aspects of life.

Event Log: 3/25/14 - Back Together

A friend of mine returned from a cruise and we met together in a Google+ hangout. I'm sure Google regrets sinking so much time and money in a social network no one uses. It's sad, really. I hear people have been leaving Facebook in droves (the teenager demographic). That's the problem with internet trends. New ones emerge and old ones fade away. Doesn't help when Facebook is hellbent on destroying the word "Privacy." It's a corporate shell of its former self, just like my Profile page.

News of the Facebook buyout of Oculus Rift certainly sent shockwaves through the internet. Hardcore gamers lament while marketing suits rejoice.

I went on my walk--well, it's not a walk anymore. I decided to mix it up and go between varying states of walking, jogging, and sprinting. I can definitely feel my increased stamina.

Naval Strike for BF4 came out today but my friend never texted me. Guess we're not playing. Oh well, I'm busy reading manga.

Event Log: 3/24/14 - Open Ended

I originally planned to pump up the front tire of the bike in my backyard to go riding. The pump I used didn't work. It was too small; it was probably for balls, not tires. If there was any consolation, my brother came home from work with Lays Stax, BBQ flavor, and two McDonald's cheeseburgers.

I checked my weight today and I don't know if the fluctuations are normal. Yesterday, I was 104, today, I'm 101.

My right arm is smaller than my left arm (biceps), which means I have to focus on my right more. I don't like being off-balanced. I'm a fan of symmetry.

With the first game down, I finished off the rest of the series against the Heat in the NBA finals. We won the next one, but once we played on their home court, the AI went into BS-overdrive. Wade, my cover, was completely unstoppable and waltzed passed me like I wasn't there. It was stupid. We got blown out. It was a game where we were forced to lose no matter what. I can tell because my teammates start screwing up in crunch time for no freakin' reason.

The game was glitched. Normally, the finals format goes 2-3-2 but in NBA 2K14, it went 2-2-1-1-1. Somebody screwed up the programming. [Never mind. They changed it.] We won the first two, lost the third, and then won the next two after that. Which means we were supposed to win on their home court. Oh well, it's nice winning the championship at home. Naturally, I was Finals MVP.

The final game was intense. It ended in overtime. Coach made me sit out for the first few minutes of OT and when I came in, we were up by six. We never looked back.

We the championship under my belt, my goal now is to get traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. Watch out Kobe, I'm taking your spot.

To cap off the night, my friend and I made a lot of progress in Dead Nation. Since we know the in's and out's and effectiveness of each weapon, our playthrough has be expectionally smooth. Unfortunately, we died once and that ended our no death streak. C'est la vie.

Event Log: 3/23/14 - Obsession Pays

An interesting game caught my eye on NeoGAF called "Thought It Was A Harem Paradise, It Was a Yandere Hell." The forum members joked as usual, posting images from a manga called Koharu no Hibi. It's about a girl who is crazy obsessive about a boy.

[SPOILER ALERT]

Usually, an offhand reference or recommendation on a forum is enough to get me reading something new. I finished the whole thing and anxiously waited for the other shoe to drop. After all, when a girl is insanely possessive, it can only end in murder, right?

Alas, it was not to be. Instead, they ended up "happily ever after." I checked out what people thought of the ending and most were disappointed. Ironically, instead of the bloody ending most people expected, we get a "happy ending" that's far more disturbing since the protagonist ultimately gives into his girlfriend's obsession.

Just goes to show being crazy pays.

[END SPOILER]

While I was waiting for my mom to finish cooking pho, I held my niece in my arms for the first time. She's put on some weight. She's reached the point where she mimics what she sees. I couldn't help smiling when I held her and when she looked into my eyes and smiled back, it was goddamned magical. Babies are adorable!

My friend and I beat Dead Nation. It was fun and a good addition to PS+. We started up a new game on Morbid difficulty. Since we know how everything is laid out, we didn't die even though it's harder. That's how my night ended.

Event Log: 3/22/14 - Looking Underground

NeoGAF sucked up most of my afternoon, and since that's when I woke up, that was pretty much the entirety of my day.

I played the first game of the finals as my Shooting Guard. After defeating the Spurs, we were going up against the Heat hot off their sweep of the 76'ers. The social challenge was to keep Wade under 25 points. I accomplished it. It was close for the first three quarters but we pulled away towards the end. My team was killing it. I was one assist away from a triple double.

Then I played my Center in the Rising Stars All-Star game. At first, I was annoyed playing Center since the AI jacks up three pointers all day. What can I do when I'm stuck in the paint and my teammates can't defend the perimeter? Then I figured out that if I sag off my man, the AI always passes it inside and I can swoop in and get the block. I can pretty much dictate the AI's offense by doing this. Even if I don't get the block, I can at least alter the shot. If not, then it's two points instead of three. I'm able to shut down the opposing center 90% of the time.

I'm thinking about hitting up Vegas for Evo in July. I'm using Kayak and Trip Advisor. The biggest lesson learned? Don't trust the price until you're at checkout. That's when they tack on all the BS like resort fees. Twenty dollars for each night? That's forty extra on top of the room. Ridiculous. Prices in July aren't cheap, especially on a weekend.

For the hell of it, I did research and stumbled upon a website that proceeded to blow my mind in the availability of pay-for-sex venues around not just Vegas, but in my area. I guess when you live with your head in the sand, you can't see all the underground stuff that goes on around you. It's purely an academic exercise. It's not like I'm looking into this for future reference or anything like that. Honest!

Worse things have been known to happen under our noses. There's probably some poor girl locked up in some psychopath's basement right now. The thought is mildly discomforting.

Event Log: 3/21/14 - Killing Zombies

Today will go down in history as the day I played Dead Nation. I downloaded it out of obligation since it was free on PS+. It's the kind of game I'd never play solo.To my surprise, my friend texted me this morning asking if I wanted to play. Why not? We started on Grim difficulty but after enough upgrades, the zombie hordes became manageable. Didn't stop us from dying a couple times though. Some of the checkpoints are brutal.

I've played Dead Nation before on the PS3 in local coop and it was pretty fun. Aside from some lag issues, the game is just as good as I remembered. Resogun is still Housemarque's best game though.

Event Log: 3/20/14 - Going the Distance

I calculated the length of my run using an online distance measuring tool. It's roughly three miles. I was surprised because it felt a lot longer than that. I know for sure that it's longer than what I used to run. I'm considering switching up from regular running to interval workouts. I didn't research it too deeply but interval seems to be better from what little I've read. I'll be approaching it haphazardly.

I was able to run 90% of the route. My body was conditioned better than I thought. I'm still not there yet. By the end, I was dying. If I can finish the run feeling good, that's when I know I've
hit the mark.

In NBA 2K14, I met the Spurs in the Western Conference finals. I can't believe they actually pushed me to seven games. We won all our home games and they won all of theirs. Two of the losses I could've won and one even went into overtime. Unfortunately, it was not to be because the game screwed me over with it's cheating scripting. In the final game, we blew them out by 20+ points. That's when you know something funny is going on behind the scenes.

Event Log: 3/19/14 - An Old Friend

I spent most of this morning reading impressions of Project Morpheus. It seems to compare favorably to the Oculus Rift's 2nd revision model. Since both VR solutions won't be coming out until next year, it's all about iteration and experimentation. I wish I can sleep into the future right now. Can you imagine the possibilities?

It wasn't until late in the afternoon that my friend called me. My friend E from San Diego was visiting. R picked me up and we drove to a chicken bowl place called Tikiyaki. E and Z were already waiting for us. I got a small bowl and it was satisfactory.

We went to my house afterwards and E tried to demonstrate the amazingness of Resident Evil 4 to Z on my PS3. Then I played Outlast and jumped a couple times even though I was surrounded by friends talking loudly about Diablo 3. Then I had to spend quite a lot of time in the bathroom. I heard my friends laughing at R's plans to sell off his PS4. He missed the window for selling it by three months. He was now selling for a loss. The woman he agreed to meet with tomorrow was named Brandy. We all joked he had a date lined up.

We went to the Dragonfly, a boba drink cafe. There was a sign hanging above the counter that said "Pick Cups" and I joked that it said "Dick Cups." Many laughs were had. The place filled up unexpecteadly. There were lines as we walked out. Seemed like we swooped in right on time.

We went to Z's place and talked while he played Dark Souls on the PC. It looks good but somewhat flat. I'm kind of interested in the game now. My friend J finally got off work at 11:30 and we hit up Norm's for a late night dinner. I had breakfast, toast, eggs, and sausage links. I couldn't finish it all. Total was $10. Kind of pricey.

By the time I got home, it was too late to work out. Seems like I have to skip out today. Spending time with friends is never a waste, even if it means skipping parts of my routine.

Event Log: 3/18/14 - Just One Drink

Every time I go out, it always manages to throw my schedule out of whack. To make up for missing St. Patty's day, I went out with a friend and got myself a Midori Sour. It tasted pretty good. After that, I got myself a caramel frappuccino. It was bad timing since Sony's presentation at GDC was happening at the same time. Fortunately, Project Morpheus was announced right before I had to leave. Commence HYPE.

When I got back, all I could do was devour any and every little piece of information regarding virtual reality. After watching many YouTube videos, I am converted. VR is the real deal. Oculus Rift is trailblazing in the VR space and Sony is poised to take it mainstream. It will be the centerpiece of choice for shopping districts everywhere.

I, for one, welcome our new VR overlords.

Event Log: 3/17/14 - Juggling Act

I'm more satisfied with my production today although I'm sad I wasn't able to get a drink since it was, ya know, St. Patrick's day. Somehow, I had a feeling my plans would fall through. My extended invitation to my friends fell on deaf ears. There's no shortage of things to do on my end though.

I made exceptional progress through Pokemon Y. I've only got two gyms left before I can walk on Victory Road. After the 6th gym, I had to go through this really long route and Frost Cavern. Figures the game would throw another curve ball at me. If I wasn't borrowing this game, I would take my sweet time. I really do think a 3DS is worth it for this game alone.

I managed to sweep the Grizzlies as a Shooting Guard in MyCareer and finally made it to the Lakers as a Small Forward. I'm thinking of playing on 6 minute quarters for my Center and Small Forward until the play offs. Screw the stats, I just wanna power through the season. I used up all my remaining VC to max out my SF. He's 99 overall--even better than my shooting guard.

Been catching up Shokugeki no Soma. It's always funny how tastes manages to overwhelm them like a fantasy. I don't think food has ever made me feel that way. My palate isn't sophisticated enough. Fine dining is wasted on me. I just want to be filled.

I pushed myself a little harder than usual during my workout. I don't know if I'm seeing results though.

Event Log: 3/16/14 - Under Pressure

I hate making big decisions over the weekend. It's supposed to be my free time. I don't want to be agonizing over anything. My brain should be clear and free of any distractions. I think this week, more than anything, showed the chaos sown by lack of proper planning. I'm gonna have to scramble to make up for loss time. It's gonna be messy, but slapdash work is better than nothing.

I decided to accept the freelance contract. It sucks because this week is gonna be big for gaming. Rumors point to Sony's VR solution to being unveiled and MGS: Ground Zeroes and Infamous: Second Son are coming out. I'm not gonna buy any of it even though my PS4 is starving for new content. Why? Because my backlog is ginormous. I'd rather save money in the long run, if nothing else.

The terms of the freelance contract are extremely flexible. I have to follow basic guidelines and turn in a minimum of five articles per week. It's gonna take some time to ramp up my production since my Master Plan didn't account for this development. Hopefully, I'll be able to complete everything I need to by the end of this month. We're past the halfway mark so it's still salvageable.

Event Log: 3/15/14 - Won't Get Fooled Again

Meet the new day, same as the old day. When I fall into a rut, it goes on and on. It's never a one-off thing. It takes time to dig myself out. I can probably copy paste my entry from yesterday and it'll still apply.

I slept earlier than usual. When that happens, I wake up in the middle of the night and my mouth tastes terrible. But after I brush my teeth, I get wide awake. It's sort of a double-edged sword.

This morning, I got a freelancer contract. I can write as much as I want provided I hit the minimum of five articles a week. I dived into this gig earlier than expected. I was supposed to have two free weeks. Guess it doesn't hurt to start earning cash now. I haven't really prepared myself mentally though, so I'll be jumping in with the lions if I do accept it.

I gotta sleep on this.

Event Log: 3/14/14 - When You've Got Nothing To Say...

Forgettable days are just that--forgettable. I had my interview this morning and the job was not for me. I'm afraid of what I don't know, which makes it all the more imperative to learn. Once understood, even the most complex tasks become manageable. I don't know how willing I am to adapt to the proposed position though. The responsibilities were unlike what I applied for. Either I'm being too lackadaisical with my reading or my applications are ending up in the wrong departments. I thought it was the human resource person's job to filter out bad apps. I wonder if she saw some raw potential in mine and decided to give me a shot? Either way, I shut down the interview because I wasn't a good fit. It probably could've worked out if I tried hard, but I want to be discerning. I want to like what I do, not force it.

Thanks to that early interview, I napped quite ferociously throughout the day.

With the pressure off my shoulders, I retreated into the fantasy world of manga. I added a couple new ones to my bookmark collection.

Event Log: 3/13/14 - Averting My Eyes

I caught up to the most recent episode of Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions. After that, I ran. I decided to go without my headphones. It was a quiet run. The only thing I could concentrate on was the sound of my breathing. It's probably better to keep my mouth shut but it feels good to gasp for dear life. I find it easier to think when there's no music. It's like every time I run, some new nagging issue crops up with my legs. My left foot didn't bother me nearly as much as my right thigh. My stomach started cramping too. It'll still be awhile before I can run unhinged.

I made it to Shalour Town in Pokemon Y. I hit a rough patch. I felt a bit under-leveled. My slog through the cave was filled with more visits to the Pokemon center than usual.

I have an interview next morning and my refusal to succumb to pressure threw me in the opposite direction and I spent the whole night finishing off two mangas on my plate: Beelzebub and Code: Breaker. I think I"m back on my manga binge.

Event Log: 3/12/14 - Catching Up

I got an interview lined up for Friday noon. This will be my first interview for the year. Just goes to show you how hard I'm hustling for jobs. Then again, my hustle is directly proportional to my level of desperation. I'm not pushing the panic button yet. No need. I still got plenty of time.

I spent most of the day writing down my adventures in Pokemon Y. Even though nobody seems to care for it, it's one of those "I wanna make something out of nothing" moments. Feels like a waste to play a game and not do anything with the experience. It does make for very slow going, but since I've already put this much time in it, I might as well go all the way. I've already sank 20 hours and barely got two badges to show for it. This can't be an 80 hour game. I'm probably wasting too much time dawdling.

To cap off the night, I watched anime. I finished off an old series I left unfinished: My Mental Choices are Completely Interfering with my School Romantic Comedy. It's ridiculous, but in a good way. Then I was surprised to see the second season of Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions. I got to see this.

Event Log: 3/11/14 - Something Is Always Better Than Nothing

I started watching Shakugan no Shana and I'm disappointed to see animation recycling in the first episode. The set up is cliche (mundane into fantastical) but I remain intrigued. What can I say? I'm easily pleased.

The centerpiece of today was my walk. My mind really wandered and I detailed the process on my Tumblr. I only got one epic run in me for each week and I'll reserve that for Thursdays. On Tuesdays, I'll just go on a long leisurely stroll. It gives me time to think while still being active.

I put together my outline for the next chapter of Mister Cinderella and completed my cold open. It's a rather intense introduction and the plot will definitely be accelerating quickly. According to my current projection, the story will be done by chapter fourteen.

I've definitely got my nose in NeoGAF more than usual today. Not much news but I desperately needed something to keep my mind occupied.

I poured in a couple hours in Pokemon and I still haven't reached the second gym. How long is this freak'n game? I'm prioritizing this since I'm borrowing it from a friend. I wanna beat the game by this week. Cross my fingers.

Event Log: 3/10/14 - Making Up For Lost Time

I honestly thought the MyGM series would last longer than it did, but I lost myself and went above and beyond the limits of time, barreling into the future at full force until putting together a narrative from the events I created would no longer work on a microscopic level.

I expected my first season to last longer, but I think the way it turned out was a more interesting than if I had stuck to conventional storytelling. There's no lack of these types of stories on OperationSports, but how often does someone simulate that far into the future? Not many, I'd imagine. Although it's funny how the introduction was so slow and then boom! More than half a century flies by and it's over. That's all, folks.

In other news, I squeezed out the latest chapter of Mister Cinderella. It was supposed to come out last week so I might've rushed it. It lacks my usual detailed thought process. I wanted to move things along briskly. You might notice there's a dearth of romance. That's intentional. It'll slowly dawn on readers that this isn't a romance, but rather, a story about something else. What that is, well, you'd have to continue reading to find out.

I had a real scary dream when I woke up this morning. You can read all about it on my Tumblr. I know it's a popular dream but when I read the possible interpretations, none of it applies. I'll just chalk it up to total subconscious randomness.

I finally closed out the Nuggets as my shooting guard in the first round of the playoffs and achieved the fabled five by five stat line. At least five points, five assists, five rebounds, five steals, and five blocks (and turnovers, but let's forget about that).

I haven't set my plan for this week. I should probably do that tomorrow.

NBA 2K14: MyGM - The Greatest Dynasty in History

It seems like yesterday when I stepped into Lakers HQ to stake my claim on the franchise. I promised them a dynasty and that was exactly what they got.

Funny how my career started, with a big loss against our cross town rivals the Clippers. We reeled off three straight wins after that, including a key victory against the Spurs.

The acquisition of Bledsoe made an immediate impact on our team chemistry. With a young athletic guy in the backcourt, he really opened the opportunities for old veterans Gasol and Kobe. He revitalized our team and we started rolling the competition. Nobody had any expectations for us at the beginning of the season, especially with a rookie GM at the helm, but we proved everyone wrong.

I made some mild moves during the season and traded Kent Bazemore to the Clippers for a first round pick and Ryan Hollins. We started off strong and consistent and ended the season with a 53-29 record, good enough for 3rd seed in the Western Conference.

For the end of season awards, LeBron won MVP. Rookie of the Year went to Michael Carter-Williams. Sixth Man of the Year was Andre Miller. Defensive player of the year was Anthony Davis. Most improved player was Lance Stephenson. But the most surprising nod was Pau Gasol on the All-NBA 2nd team and All-Defensive 1st team. Eric Bledsoe was on the All-NBA 3rd team. I credit Bledsoe for allowing Gasol to play the best defense of his career.

It was a tough series against the Rockets but we squeaked by in seven games in the first round. After that, we cruised passed the Grizzlies 4-1. We had our backs against the wall and survived the Trailblazers in seven in the Western Conference Finals.

We reached the Finals but our joy was short-lived. We were up against the Heat and the losses came hard and furious. They were too much for us. We were outmatched and on the verge of a sweep. With the odds against us, we were forced to accomplish what no other team had done in NBA history, and that was to come back and win. Down three, we rattled off four straight victories for the championship. They didn’t think it was possible, but we did it and achieved the impossible.

My first year was a success but my job wasn’t done. My biggest acquisition in the off-season was undoubtedly the signing of LeBron. That ensured our title contention for the next few years. Coupled with my excellent scouting, I was able to surround him with exciting young talent.

Scouting was critical to my success. I relentless watched film with the scouts to determine the best draft prospects and I traded our assets for picks. In the ensuing years, the team never had a player older than 33.

Eventually, I stumbled upon a formula that didn’t require such in depth scouting. The Sports Institute that was created at the start of my tenure was lynchpin for my success. It allowed me to accurately pinpoint the quality of each player in the league. I knew without a doubt whether I came away a winner or loser in a trade. If anyone ever asked you who was responsible for winning a championship, the front office or the players, here was the answer: the front office.

After three years of back-to-back titles, I was able to accrue enough influence to essentially take ownership of the team. It wasn’t until a decade later that true ownership was transferred to me. As owner-GM, I called the shots and put together an organization that would win everything all the time.

It starts with the staff. You can’t compromise with coaching, the athletic trainers, or the medical staff. I hired only the best to attend to organizational matters and the players.

Thanks to the Sports Institute, players on our team were rendered almost impervious to injury. The worst they ever experienced were minor tweaks that they would heal in days. Our developmental program was phenomenal, allowing even the worst players to improve by leaps and bounds. Any draft players we picked up would routinely become quality rotation players, but I concentrated heavily on high potential talent and turned them into superstars.

Our players frequently played above their ceilings, allowing us to trade them with inflated values for better prospects. I regularly fleeced the market with my overvalued assets.

The Lakers became known as a superstar farm, churning out amazing players and squeezing their talent at the peak of their abilities. Once they had reached their primes, we let them walk. Another team would sign them to huge contracts, hamstringing their ability to put together a good team at a reasonable price. It didn’t matter to us because we groomed a backup star and allowed them to take center stage next season. We did this for every position and rarely did we hold onto a player for more than ten years. If you look at the Hall of Fame, almost all of them were Lakers.

Not only were our teams regularly stacked at every position; we also never had to pay the luxury tax with the exception of three years. Thanks to my hard work, the Lakers dominated for more than half a century.

I fear my time is coming to an end. I must relinquish control to my successors. I can rest easy though. Nobody can take away from my legacy. In my 67 years as the Lakers GM, I won 65 championships, bringing our franchise total to a cool 80. Only two teams managed to best me: the Knicks and the Trailblazers.
They are mere blips in what has been the greatest run in professional sports in any league in the history of the world. Regardless of whether we win from now on until 2100, there is no question that the century belonged to us. I once proposed that the NBA be renamed to the Lakers League, and the vote almost passed thanks to our ridiculous run of consecutive championships.

It’s the year 2079. I’ve set the template and created the formula for success. Let’s hope my successor can do what I’ve always done:

WIN.

Event Log; 3/9/14 - Another Loss

Nothing interesting happened today. I woke up, surfed the web, went to church, went home, and played more MyGM. It costs 50,000 VC to buy a franchise in the mode and you earn 1,000 for each season with a profit over $15 million.

I made my money back.

Event Log: 3/8/14 - Going Out For Once

No need to meander into the land of thought today. I went out with my friends for a birthday. We ate Korean BBQ, got a drink, and watched 300: Rise of an Empire.

I noticed that my favorite KBBQ spot, Gen, underwent a change of ownership around Valentine's Day. Makes me wonder if the old owner got an offer they couldn't refuse or needed to get rid of a sinking ship. Service wasn't as great as I remembered. I hope it was just an off day.

We went to the Tilted Kilt to get a drink. They make way better seven-and-sevens than Lazy Dog across the street.

At the end of 300, people actually clapped. 300, of all movies, does not deserve applause. Movies in general do not deserve it. I only make allowance for the best of the best. On that note, I noticed that 12 Years a Slave and Frozen are still showing. I might wanna watch Frozen in theaters because man do I love Idina Menzel.

It was a long day because I got a couple hours of sleep. I went to bed at twelve. Why was I staying up so late? Because I'm trying to win more championships. I don't think I'll be satisfied until I get 100 of them. I even got an excel sheet to put me four years ahead of the competition, just to make sure I sign the best players without paying out the ass for it.

The past three days have certainly thrown my schedule into total disarray. Can I get back on track or am I forever lost in the after tow?

Event Log: 3/7/14 - Continuation

My face has broken out, my teeth have yellowed, and I'm feeling like all sorts of shit. Yup, it's a continuation of yesterday. The last two days might as well be one mega day where all I did was win fake championships. I had lots of tasks slotted for today but I threw it all away for the promise of virtual rings. Now the question is: can I make up for everything by tomorrow night?

I won about 20 championships with the Lakers. I'm the owner, so I could do whatever the hell I want with the team. I'm in the year 2035 or something like that and not a single player from today is in the game. Hell, the first rookie I drafted is already in the Hall of Fame. I think my true calling may be a manager. I can't help but fiddle with numbers. I have more fun planning contracts and drafts than actually playing the game. Since I spend 99% of my time in the menus, the 2K soundtrack has been permanently seared into my brain.

Once you figure out the formula, it's pretty easy, and with the MyGM upgrades, you pretty much become unstoppable. Everybody you draft from the first round will become superstars in four years. The Lakers pretty much became a superstar farm, churning out star after star and replacing them with new ones. I only went into the luxury tax twice in my twenty years as GM.

In my save, they should rename the NBA to the Lakers League since I'm the only team that wins, except for one years where the Knicks won. As the old saying goes: Fuck Da Knicks.

You'd think with all my rings, the league would get together and impose some new rules or something. On a side note, Bill Russell is miraculous still alive to deliver the Finals MVP trophy every year.

Man, I went so far into the future, the latest winner of the Coach of the Year award reuses Kobe's player portrait. I wonder how far I can take it before the game starts spazzing out? It's gonna be a century of Lakers dominance, baby.

Oh, and today was my friend's birthday even though we didn't do anything. Maybe we're saving the event for tomorrow?

Event Log: 3/6/14 - Into the Abyss

On occasion, I've been known to disappear off the face of the earth. That's what happened today. I was engulfed in darkness, in a realm where neither time nor distance registered. There was but one goal for me: win it all.

I can get scarily compulsive when it comes to gaming. I sometimes go on long stretches where I can't muster the motivation to turn on a console, but then there are times when it is literally the only thing I do--play, play, and play some more.

So my flex day, which is supposed to be interchangeable with one of my task days, ended up being devoted to NBA 2K14 MyGM mode. I even skipped out on my run because of it. I mentally excused myself citing my bum foot, but an excuse is an excuse.

I essentially cheated my way through the Finals against the Heat by stacking the sliders in my favor. I don't care. I want to win, damn it. But after the first year, I pretty much simulated everything. I don't have time to play games.

Event Log: 3/5/14 - Overflow

I'm still reeling from the effects of yesterday's run. My left foot is aching. I went through my morning stretches but I don't think I'll be able to run tomorrow. I might have to walk it instead. I don't want to aggravate it any further. I probably pushed my body too hard.

For today, I completed writing assignments that had been lingering from earlier this week. The only thing I have left is to beat Pokemon--or at least half of it. I was supposed be at the third gym by now but I haven't woken up Snorlax yet.

As you may have noticed, I'm doing a MyGM series. I made slow progress at first but I ended up simulating the entire season. I was planning to play games after every simulated loss, but I got lazy and wondered if my team was good enough to just blaze through everything. Apparently, it was. So MyGM will probably finished quicker than I thought. Makes me feel dumb for setting up everything so carefully.

One thing I realized about myself, I get real angry when I lose. I want to win at all costs, even if it means fudging the sliders. I want to play as little games as possible. If my team is good enough to sim victories, then I have fulfilled my job as GM. I just want to get to the draft already. Once this year is over, I'll be one third of the way to owning the Lakers. I've already got 50,000 VC waiting to be dropped on the team.

I started reading The Road and it took be some time to get used to the writing. McCarthy really hates punctuation, doesn't he? It's kind of cool, and some of the expressions he uses are pure class. I need to learn from this guy.

NBA 2K14: MyGM - The Demands

Erick Boenisch examined me closely. A laptop was open and the screen reflected off his eyes. I couldn’t tell what he was thinking.

“As you know, the Buss’s own this franchise. I’m here as their representative. You can take my word as their word.”

“I look forward to working with you.”

“Likewise.”

The room was well lit with a big window. My eyes wandered, observing impressive upholstery and furniture. It was bigger than my office.

“Let’s get down to business, shall we? As you know, we lost Dwight Howard to the Rockets, and with Kobe in decline, we have to look towards the future. We need young talent.” He leaned forward, the soft glow of the laptop tinting his face. “But this doesn’t mean we’re tanking. You were hired because you made a promise to bring us into title contention. Can I still trust you on that?”

“I don’t intend to break that promise,” I said. He seemed satisfied.

“Next year’s draft may be the deepest in ages. There is potential franchise changing talent in there.”

“Like a new Kobe Bryant?”

“There’s no one quite like Kobe, but if we can continue the Laker’s legacy of incredible players, this is the time to do it. We’ve extended the contract on Kobe, so I know your salary cap situation is less than ideal. We might not be able to make a free agent splash, so it’s imperative to get a good draft pick.”

“While still contending for the title?”

“Do whatever you have to. Make some trades. I don’t care. We need a good pick.” It was an unreasonable demand, but the Lakers were known for pulling off the impossible.

“That’s a tough sell, but I’ll see what I can do.”

“For the next goal, I know you can’t do much about this since it’s up to the coaching staff and players, but we need wins. We may be the most profitable franchise in the league, but the only profit we recognize are wins.  Put together a roster that can do that for us. I want at least twenty W’s at Staple Center.”

“I’ll see what I can do.”

“I don’t expect much trouble with this one, but sell out at least fourteen home games.”

“No problem. We have the best fans in the world. Anything else?”

“You’re new, so that’s all I got for now. Don’t worry though; I’ll be sure to think up new goals as we advance in the season. Now it’s my turn to ask what you want.”

This was my moment. I cleared my throat and ran things through my head. “We need to invest in our players. Can I trust that no expense will be spared?”

“That depends. What are you thinking?”

“Today’s NBA is a different league. Stats dominate the discussion. We need better equipment and software to analyze the potential and effectiveness of players.”

“Spoken like a true product of the numbers generation. You have something specific in mind?”

“I don’t think we’ll be able to build all of it by the end of this year, but the investment will put us ahead of the competition by years. It will also make our franchise more attractive to prospective agents. First, we should have a player lounge to keep up morale. A recovery facility should help prevent injuries. Last season was plagued by injuries. I think injury prevention is absolutely vital to our success going forward.”

“Players aren’t as durable as they used to be.”

“I want our players to be stronger, faster, and smarter. We should put together a new center using the latest research in sports science. It won’t just be for our athletes, it could be for anyone. I’m talking about a state of the art facility for maximizing player potential.”

“Sounds like you’ve already planned for this.”

“I’ve put together building designs, prospective staff—all experts in their field, along with the projected budget.”

“Intriguing. Send it to me when you get the chance. If it’s as great as you say, it might become an alternate revenue source. I’ll have the Buss’s look over the proposal. Ultimately, they control the purse strings. Anything else?”

“That’s all.”

“Good meeting. Update me by the end of the month. I’ll let you know if they’ll green light the projects.”

“Thank you.”

Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant had been a potent combination for the last few years, but it was clear that wasn’t enough anymore. Our scouting department had gotten lazy since they weren’t critical to our success. The departure of Dwight Howard was a big blow for our franchise. We needed to show the league that the Lakers are still the prime spot for the best players. If we couldn’t make a splash during free agency, then we’d do it in the draft.

Head of our scouting department was Ronald Hamlin. Although he did his best with our low draft picks, it was time for someone hungrier with something to prove. I let him go and replaced him with Ryan Lantz, an up and coming scout with an exceptional eye for talent, and signed him to a three-year contract.

“Ryan, I want to know who the superstars are going to be before the world does. Can I trust you to find the best prospects?”

“Just leave it to me, Jo.”

“Your department’s going to be a huge part of our success in the coming years. That’s why I signed you for three of them. I’m looking forward to the results.”

To maximize our profit, I made minor changes to the pricing of parking, concessions, and souvenirs.

We couldn’t tank this year, which meant we had to trade for a draft pick. I made some bold moves before the season started. I traded Wesley Johnson for the Jazz’s first round pick.

Next, I sent Kendall Marshall and Steve Nash to the Suns for Eric Bledsoe and their 2015 second round pick. Normally, they would never accept it, but I convinced them that a player as great as Nash should retire in Phoenix. I’m sure their medical staff could squeeze out a miraculous final season from him too.

I was going all in for this next transaction. I gave up my first round picks for both 2014 and 2015 for the Piston’s 2014 first rounder. For this season, I hope to god that the Pistons and Jazz fail spectacularly. If worse comes to worse, I’m putting Bledsoe on the trading block for picks. Thankfully, none of the picks are lottery protected.

With a dynamic young player like Bledsoe in our starting lineup, I hoped to squeeze just a little more juice out of the Gasol-Kobe combo. What I really wanted was a big man to control the paint, but this should be enough for now.

Event Log: 3/4/14 - When Fun Becomes a Grind

I spent the majority of today playing video games. This was 2K day. I've probably sank more hours into this than Battlefield 4. I'm in the playoffs with my shooting guard, and since Game 1 was too close, barely winning by 2 points, I wanted to blow them out for the second one, and I accomplished that by scoring 93 points. This was on 10-minute quarters too. Game was mostly neck and neck until the fourth quarter where we went on a crazy run.

We're up against the Nuggets and they had the audacity to put Nate Robinson on me. That is truly disrespectful. I scored in a variety of ways, from breaking him off the dribble or backing him down. He could not stop me and they refused to double me. If that's how they want to play it, then I'll just score as much as I want. I ended up with 80% shooting or something ridiculous like that.

I switched over to my center and played two games to reach All Star weekend. I won the first one, but the second game against the Thunder was pure cheese. There was nothing I can do. I'm a rim protector, but how can I get blocks or rebounds if everything shot beyond the 3 point line goes in? Someone on the 2K development team has a serious hard on for Jeremy Lamb. He's the new Ray Allen. He makes treys all day with hands in his face. It's stupid.

Then I played all the games in December for my small forward. I'm trying to use a method to get myself traded to the Lakers. Originally, I wanted my small forward to follow a realistic career trajectory. I didn't want to become a bona fide superstar until my third year, but then I realized: ain't nobody got time for that. If I could simulate the first year, then I would do that, but since I'm forced to play every game of the first season, I might as well dominate.

My small forward plays on the Jazz and they are straight up garbage. We're the worst team in the league. I told Derrick Favors to shove off when he asked me to become a sidekick. For the record, Favors is trash. To prove myself, I'm supposed to score 25 in a blowout for our next game. I did more than that, I scored 50, but since it wasn't a blowout, Favors got in my grill like I didn't play my heart out to get us the win.

We were trailing in the fourth and I made two clutch buckets to tie it up. I dragged our collective limp asses into overtime and won it there. After an amazing game like that, just because it wasn't a blowout, I "failed" the objective? Fuck you, 2K. I can't wait to get out of this crappy team. I should be getting traded sometime soon since I already asked for Favor's ass to be gone.

I started up Bioshock Infinite and got to Elizabeth. I uncapped the framerate because no amount of screen tearing can distract me from an overall smoother experience. So far, I'm digging the game, but it does feel like a more linear version of Bioshock.

I went on an epic run that left me exhausted. I hope I didn't injure my left foot. It's been nagging me lately. I'm trying to massage out the kinks but I wonder if it's something that needs to be healed? Maybe I should skip out on Thursday, or at least take it easier.

Event Log: 3/3/14 - Bad Starts

I piled on the tasks for Monday and what did I get for it? Nothing done. This was somewhat within my expectations since I frontloaded the beginning of the week.

I watched the premiere of Hannibal last night. I was shaking in excitement like a kid about to watch a big screen adaptation of his favorite show (Power Rangers!). With the amazing cinematography, it's an easy mistake to make. Hannibal has somehow become my most anticipated show for this year. It turns serial killing into an art I can appreciate.

I'm getting better at thinking about something to write and then writing it immediately instead of keeping the thought locked up in my head. Two posts I wouldn't have written otherwise have been produced this way. I should keep up the good work.

I played the first game of the playoffs for my Shooting Guard. We barely won by two. It was a cheesy game, but we got it done.

I fully trained three Pokemon in my party: Frogadier, Ivysaur, and Fletchinder. A whole lot of balloon shooting was involved. Frogadier and Ivysaur are SUPREMELY trained, which isn't any different from FULLY trained other than the distinction of having stars next to it. Feels good either way.

Event Log: 3/2/14 - Reset

It's been quite the productive week for me. Today marks the end of my first scheduling exercise. I managed to do everything I wanted except for one thing: beat the second gym in Pokemon Y. Not a big loss. I'll set my sights a little bigger and try to beat Gym 2, 3, and 4.

I spent this entire night planning. I should've done this yesterday. I fleshed out my master schedule too. Breaking everything down into chunks makes everything more manageable.

Sunday was supposed to be my do anything day, and I spent the afternoon doing just that. I tried jumping into NBA 2K14 for my daily VC collection, but since the 2K servers were screwing around, I booted up the FFXIV beta instead.

Even though I downloaded it a week ago, I didn't jump in until today. I would've played it a long time ago if it wasn't for the servers being full. Of course, just when I'm getting into it, I learn that the beta ends tonight. At least I extracted a couple hours of fun out of it. I reached level 9. Time for the Phase 2 in April.

The Oscars rolled around and Best Picture went to the movie I expected. I can't say much except that everything was Gravity. I'd almost call it a Gravity Sweep. That's a good name for a cool technique.

The one task I was worried about most was updating Mister Cinderella. I managed to sneak it in at the end. I don't know if it counts, but getting it out was no small feat. I feel good about it.

I've been trying to realign my diet since I'm working out more. I'm gonna try reducing my rice intake and eat more meat. I need my protein.

My back hurts like hell. What's going on?

On the way home from church, I waited by a light for ten minutes because of the longest freight train I'd ever seen. Holy crap.

Event Log: 3/1/14 - Happy Birthday, Brother

Happy birthday, brother!

I seem to be getting lazier with these Event Logs, putting them off for tomorrow instead of finishing them tonight. When nothing special happens, there's not much motivation to write.

I finally beat Deadly Premonition. I bought this game in 2011, which was three years ago. It's not even a RPG, so it shouldn't have taken that long to complete, but it did.

When I finally clear games like these, it feels like a load off my shoulders. My backlog would've been reduced to one game if it wasn't for Playstation Plus. Thanks to that, I have eighteen games I have to beat now. Holy crap.

Deadly Premonition is kind of like Insidious in that it starts off very intriguing but then goes off the rails at the end into some crazy fantastic adventure. I think it fits. Looking through the bonus pictures, I would love to visit the original town of inspiration the development team traveled to.

At least with this, I no longer need my 360, and I handed it down to my brother who will use it as his Street Fighter box from now on.

This frees up my PS3. I left it on the whole night to download the free games I missed out on, including Devil May Cry, Bioshock Infinite, Tales of Xilia, and many, many more.

I capped off the night by watching a bunch of MyGM YouTube videos.

Event Log: 2/28/14 - The Finishing Blow

After playing the four final games of the season to reach the playoffs as my shooting guard in NBA 2K14, I decided to check up on the TwitchPlaysPokemon stream to witness the finale, and by finale, I mean the finishing blow by Zapdos on Blastoise.

Pretty amazing to see the end of such a crazy experience. I didn't invest as much time as others did, but I'm glad the whole thing is over. As a social experiment, the stream was a resounding success, and I believe the world of Pokemon and video game streaming will be forever altered. I'm glad I was a small part of it, because you bet this will be recorded in the annals of history.

Just goes to show that nothing is impossible if we all put our heads together--and an ungodly amount of hours. Praise be to Helix.

With my first planned week almost over, I discovered a couple issues that I could iron out for better productivity. For one, my goals were top heavy and skewed towards video games. I should focus less on that and put more of my goals on writing. I had a lot more slack than I anticipated, but certain tasks require more devotion and time and shouldn't be shared with others in the same day.

I'll be increasing the work load for next week. At least now I know where to tighten up my schedule.

I can't believe I split the last four games of the season. Some of the losses were bullshit too. I won MVP and Rookie of the Year award, as well as a spot on the All Defensive team. I'm taking the Trailblazers all the way to the promised land.

I made significant progress through Deadly Premonition, but it seems like I'm gonna have to pull an all day'er to beat it by tomorrow.

Things are looking grim for my next Mister Cinderella update. Hopefully I can make enough revisions for it to be presentable.
