In the summers of my long lost adolescence, the last day of summer vacation carried the weight of grand expectations. I should go out with a bang, right? But without fail, the last day passed like any other without pomp and circumstance.
While a big bang is appealing in theory, in practice, I'm much more likely to let change come as it may. No flash, but a quiet transition. I don't need trumpets announcing every stage of my life. Thus, my last Sunday of unemployment passed peacefully.
I have no idea what to expect tomorrow. I have a vague idea but there's nothing like jumping headfirst into the unknown. Before I submit myself to the clutches of my employer's design, I wanted to finish off my Halloween movie marathon.
The first movie was a black comedy featuring Tom Hanks called The 'Burbs. Charismatic as he may be, he alone can't save a bog standard, paranoia-fueled, slapstick comedy about suspicious neighbors who may or may not be killers. Thanks to this movie, I discovered that Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher are the same age. This reaffirms my belief that women don't age as gracefully as men--at least in Hollywood.
The second film is a classic from Hitchcock, The Birds. I found myself smiling the entire way through. The sinister birds in question act as a mere backdrop for a pair of neurotic lovers. I found their hijinks highly amusing. My favorite scene takes place in a diner where the townspeople begin to speculate about the reason behind the bird attacks. You have the doomsday prophet, the expert skeptic, and the hysterical lady, all classic character archetypes. The scene eventually culminates in a car explosion. How can you not like that?
I finished the night late since I'm still in the process of pulling out Destiny's hooks. It'll take me a while before I can normalize my sleep schedule.
